Obtaining an Occupational License

When starting your own business, you may need to acquire an occupational license so that your business can legally operate in your geographical area. Occupational licenses are used by your local municipality to identify the existence of your business. Additionally, they are used to verify whether or not your business is in compliance with local zoning ordinances, and they allow its revenue to be collected.

It’s important to note that – county occupational licenses are required if your business is located outside of the city limits but within county lines. And – an additional city occupational license may be required if your business is located inside the city limits when this geographical area is also considered to be within the county jurisdiction.

To go about acquiring an occupational license, you will need to contact your local county courthouse or city hall to determine if an occupational license is required for your business’ specific geographical location. Doing your research is key, as – in some parts of the country – businesses, particularly home-based businesses, may not need occupational licenses, so make sure to do your due diligence!

Be prepared, too, as fees generally range from $10.00 to $100.00.
